Belgian Sheepdogs are muscular and solid, with a proud carriage.
The four varieties take their names from geographical locations in Belgium; all working farm dogs who herd and guard. The Groenendael is known as the Chien de Berger Belge or standard Belgian Sheepdog.
Personality

Size
- Males – 24 to 26 inches in height, 65 to 75 pounds
- Females ñ 22 to 24 inches in height, 55 to 70 pounds
Coat
- Four distinct coats: Groenendael (long, shimmering black coat); Tervuren (long coat that is typically mahogany or red); Malinois (short-haired); and Laekenois (wire-haired)
Care
- Shed seasonally but not regularly
- Their coat should be brushed at least twice a week
- Need a lot of exercise, including daily long jogs or other strenuous activity
- They should not be confined to small living spaces
Health
- No major health concerns with this breed, only occasional hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia.

- 12 – 14 years
