Belgian Sheepdog

Affectionate and friendly, Belgian Sheepdogs are playful and alert – but also independent and intense. They are protective dogs, possessive of family, and may be aloof with strangers.

Belgian Sheepdogs are muscular and solid, with a proud carriage.

The four varieties take their names from geographical locations in Belgium; all working farm dogs who herd and guard. The Groenendael is known as the Chien de Berger Belge or standard Belgian Sheepdog.

Personality

  • An affectionate and friendly dog, playful, and alert but also independent and intense.
  • They are protective dogs, possessive of family, and may be aloof with strangers.

Size

  • Males – 24 to 26 inches in height, 65 to 75 pounds
  • Females ñ 22 to 24 inches in height, 55 to 70 pounds

Coat

  • Four distinct coats: Groenendael (long, shimmering black coat); Tervuren (long coat that is typically mahogany or red); Malinois (short-haired); and Laekenois (wire-haired)

Care

  • Shed seasonally but not regularly
  • Their coat should be brushed at least twice a week
  • Need a lot of exercise, including daily long jogs or other strenuous activity
  • They should not be confined to small living spaces

Health

  • No major health concerns with this breed, only occasional hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia.

Life Expectancy

  • 12 – 14 years
